Monaco joins the international community in celebrating World Environment Day on Thursday, June 5. It’s a global event led by the United Nations that inspires action to protect both land and sea. This year’s focus—the fight against plastic pollution—highlights one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time.

Monaco’s proactive stance on plastic reduction

Since its inception in 1974, World Environment Day has grown into a global platform observed in over 100 countries, and Monaco consistently plays an active role. Over the years, the Principality has implemented a series of progressive measures to reduce plastic consumption. These include a ban on plastic bags introduced in 2016, the prohibition of single-use plastic packaging, widespread public awareness campaigns, and ongoing beach clean-ups.

Engaging activities at Rue Princesse Caroline

To mark the day locally, the Department of the Environment will set up a dedicated stand at the bottom of Rue Princesse Caroline, open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Visitors can expect a dynamic program aimed at informing, engaging, and empowering the public to make sustainable choices.

Throughout the day, the Department of the Environment, alongside Ecoscience Provence, will showcase practical alternatives to single-use plastics, shed light on misleading “green” claims in consumer goods, and highlight the daily actions taken by eco-conscious businesses in the Principality. Hands-on workshops will offer attendees the chance to explore zero-waste lifestyles while discussing biodiversity and broader environmental concerns.

Collaborative efforts and innovative solutions

Several organizations will participate, presenting various eco-friendly solutions:

  • Green Box Monaco (9:00 AM – 11:30 AM): They’ll demonstrate their innovative reusable transport crates, providing a glimpse into waste-free logistics.
  • Department of Tourism and Conventions (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM): They’ll help visitors understand local waste-sorting practices and share their guide to sustainable tourism in Monaco.
  • Ecoslowasting (11:30 AM – 2:30 PM): They’ll introduce their anti-waste platform and offer tips to cut down on food waste.
  • Monaco Animal Garden (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Represented by Laurent Peyronnel.
  • Energy Transition Mission (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): They’ll explain the benefits of the “Ma Consigne” deposit-return system, highlighting its positive impact on both the environment and personal health.
  • Monaco Town Hall (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM): They’ll present their “Petite Boîte” initiative—a clever solution to help reduce food waste when dining out.

Monaco’s comprehensive approach to World Environment Day showcases its ongoing commitment to environmental protection through education, practical solutions, and community engagement.
