Monaco is making waves, not just in the ocean, but in the cosmos! The Principality has officially joined the Space4Ocean Alliance (S4O) as a founding member at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, forging a groundbreaking connection between the vastness of space exploration and the urgent mission of marine conservation. Monaco’s bold leap, announced yesterday, echoes the pioneering spirit of Prince Albert I, a true father of modern oceanography, and aligns perfectly with the upcoming UN Ocean 2025 Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica.

Satellites to safeguard our seas: The vision of Space4Ocean

At its core, this revolutionary alliance aims to leverage cutting-edge space technology to deepen our understanding of Earth’s oceans. Spearheaded by France’s Centre National d’Études Spatiales (National Centre for Space Studies), S4O unites a powerful consortium of space agencies, leading marine researchers, industry titans, and influential policymakers. Their collective mission? To utilize advanced satellite data and state-of-the-art observation tools to fill critical gaps in ocean monitoring, thereby bolstering the United Nations’ vital Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

Monaco: A new force in the final frontier

Monaco’s ascent in the space sector has been rapid and strategic. Since the establishment of its Office for Space Affairs in 2021, driven by Prince Albert II’s vision, the Principality has become a formidable player. A prime example of this innovation is the strategic partnership between Astrolab and the Venturi Group, which has yielded revolutionary batteries for the FLEX lunar rover. This advanced rover features deformable wheels ingeniously designed in Switzerland by Venturi Lab, showcasing Monaco’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries.

This alliance truly transcends earthly borders, transforming Monaco into a unique bridge – connecting the depths of the sea with the infinite expanse of the sky. It’s a testament to the Principality’s enduring legacy of innovation and unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability.
