Did you know the world of luxury yachts is changing from its very core, and for the better? The Yacht Club de Monaco is taking the helm, transforming this industry into a leader of decarbonisation with their ingenious tool – the SEA Index®! Presented at the prestigious Blue Economy and Finance Forum, under the watchful eye of Prince Albert II, this index is recognized as a crucial driver for the maritime ecological transition. And this is in a sector that already turns over an incredible 2,500 billion dollars annually! Monaco is literally redefining the environmental standards of luxury yachting.

What is the SEA Index®?

So, what exactly is the SEA Index®? Developed in 2020 in partnership with Credit Suisse (UBS Group), and certified by Lloyd’s Register and CAPENERGIES, this index offers superyachts over 24 meters in length a comprehensive methodology for measuring their environmental impact. But it’s not just a mere measurement! It includes a lifecycle emissions calculator and anticipates future standards. Smart, right? This vision transforms decarbonisation from a tedious regulation into a genuine, shared responsibility.

Pioneering leadership and future-proofing

But that’s not all! The innovative approach of the SEA Index® is already preparing to encompass air and noise pollution, as well as future technologies like fuel cells. This allows superyacht owners to demonstrate true leadership while preparing for what’s next.

Global adoption and Monaco’s vision

The results are clear: the SEA Index® is expanding! Around twenty ports in the Région Sud have already adopted it, and its international reach even extends to the Seychelles. This only confirms Monaco’s ambition to establish the Mediterranean as a global hub for sustainable maritime innovation.

Plus, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1-5 July 2025) builds on this success, bringing together engineering schools and manufacturers to test tomorrow’s energy technologies. It’s a holistic approach that places Monaco at the epicenter of yachting’s green revolution!
