Monaco’s historic harbor is about to become a living museum as the 17th edition of the Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe gets underway. This prestigious, invitation-only event, organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco and held under the patronage of Prince Albert II, brings together 187 of the world’s most magnificent classic and vintage vessels from September 10th to 13th.
A star-studded lineup
The gathering is a showcase of maritime history, with a spectacular fleet that includes 52 sailing yachts, 53 powerboats, 45 motorboats, 15 motor yachts up to 80 meters, and 22 Dinghy 12′ vessels. Each one tells a unique story.
Among the sailing legends is the 65-meter Creole (1927) and Zaca (1929), which once served as Errol Flynn’s floating home and appeared in the film ‘The Lady from Shanghai’. The 140-year-old Partridge is also a highlight, a testament to dedication after a 17-year restoration following its rescue from the mud of the River Blackwater.
The motor yacht category is equally impressive. The 79-meter Delphine (1921) and the 45-meter Kalizma (1906), famously gifted by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor, will be on display. Nicknamed the ‘Orient Express of the seas’, the Kalizma has a history as rich as its former owner’s. Other notable vessels include Invader (1905), which once hosted Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin, and Manitou (1937), affectionately known as the ‘Floating White House’ for its use by President John F. Kennedy.
Beyond the docks
The event is more than just a display of boats; it’s a celebration of classic maritime culture. An expert panel, led by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, will judge the vessels, while the Elegance Contest will be chaired by Allegra Gucci. The popular Chefs Competition also returns, challenging crews to create gourmet dishes from a mystery box of organic ingredients.
The public is invited to experience this spectacle firsthand. The quays and Exhibitors’ Village will be open for free from September 10th to 13th, from 10 am to 7 pm. Visitors can walk among these historic vessels, browse the works of marine artists and photographers, watch traditional maritime craftsmen at work, and explore the YCM Official Boutique.
