A royal presence graces Japan
Monaco brought its signature blend of elegance, environmental commitment, and international friendship to Japan this weekend, marking its National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka. The celebrations, held on Saturday, June 28, were a testament to the Principality’s growing global engagement and its deep ties with Japan. Leading the Monegasque delegation were His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and Her Serene Highness Princess Stéphanie, joined by their children Pauline Ducruet, Camille Gottlieb, Louis Ducruet, and Marie Ducruet. Their collective presence underscored the importance of this momentous occasion.
A Day of cultural exchange and solemn ceremony
The day commenced with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a serene moment of cultural exchange that beautifully mirrored the themes of harmony and respect central to the Expo. Following this, the Princely Family attended the official National Day ceremony, accompanied by Her Imperial Highness Princess Hisako of Takamado, representing the esteemed Japanese Imperial Family. The air in the National Day Hall was filled with the solemn and stirring melodies of the Orchestre des Carabiniers du Prince, setting a dignified tone for the festivities.
In his address, HSH Prince Albert II spoke with characteristic clarity and conviction about the urgent challenges facing our planet. He emphasized the critical need for collective action, stating, “This Universal Exhibition is a reminder that our vision for the future must be rooted in respect for nature and shared responsibility.” His words resonated deeply, serving as a powerful call to action for all nations.

The “Take care of wonder” pavilion: A beacon of sustainability
At the very heart of Monaco’s impactful participation at Expo 2025 lies the “Take Care of Wonder” Pavilion, an immersive and captivating space that has already enchanted over half a million visitors. This innovative pavilion invites guests on a journey to explore humanity’s profound connection to the natural world. Visitors can wander through a sensory gallery, discover cutting-edge green technologies at the Monaco Green Lab, and be mesmerized by an ocean room that celebrates the breathtaking beauty of marine biodiversity.
Flanking the pavilion are meticulously designed Japanese and Mediterranean gardens, serving as living, breathing symbols of the universal imperative to protect nature as a shared global heritage. The day’s rich symbolism continued as Prince Albert II presented an olive tree to the Mayor of Osaka – a heartfelt gesture of peace, unity, and enduring friendship between their respective nations.
Exploring global visions and artistic expressions
Following the formal celebrations, the Monegasque delegation embarked on a tour of several national pavilions, including those of Japan, Saudi Arabia, and France. Japan’s “Between Lives” exhibition, inspired by Zen philosophy and the cyclical rhythms of nature, proved a particular highlight, offering a serene and thought-provoking experience. Saudi Arabia’s “Riyadh 2030” project also captivated the delegation, showcasing ambitious plans for sustainable development that remarkably align with the Principality’s own ecological priorities.
The day culminated in a series of breathtaking cultural performances, reflecting Monaco’s vibrant artistic flair. The Orchestre des Carabiniers du Prince, the graceful Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and the talented Académie Princesse Grace took to the stage, offering a refined and elegant celebration of the Principality’s creativity and humanist values.
As HSH Prince Albert II eloquently noted in his closing remarks, “Our pavilion is more than an exhibition — it’s a reminder that we are all part of one human community. The future demands connection, not isolation, and a deep respect for the natural world that sustains us all.” His powerful message underscored the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that defined Monaco’s impactful National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka.
