Monaco is set to play a pivotal role in global ocean protection as the Grimaldi Forum hosts the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) on June 7th and 8th. This significant event serves as a special preparatory forum for the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3).

Co-organized by the Princier de Monaco Government, the Oceanographic Institute, and the Prince Albert II de Monaco Foundation, and supported by France and Costa Rica, BEFF’s core objective is to accelerate the financing of a regenerative blue economy. This involves a critical mobilization of both public and private investments to ensure the sustainable protection of our oceans and foster economic viability.

Through events like BEFF and the broader UN Ocean Conference, Monaco firmly solidifies its reputation as an international leader in ecological transition and sustainable finance, consistently championing concrete solutions for a greener and more responsible future.

BEFF’s focus on pragmatic agreements

The BEFF event, concluding on Sunday, will feature high-level addresses from key global leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles, and Prince Albert II of Monaco. The forum’s emphasis will be on forging pragmatic agreements among all involved parties, translating discussions into actionable commitments for ocean health and sustainable economic practices.

The BEFF effectively sets the stage for the highly relevant United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled to take place in Nice from June 9th to 13th, 2025. While BEFF concentrates on specific, actionable financing solutions, UNOC3 aims to develop a broader policy framework, culminating in a general declaration titled “Nice Ocean Action Plan.” This two-pronged approach, with Monaco’s BEFF leading the charge on finance, underscores the Principality’s dedication to both the practical implementation and the overarching strategic goals for ocean protection and sustainable development.
