On June 12, Monaco is set to host an exceptional cultural event – a celebration of grand French theatre through a special performance of L’Impromptu de Versailles.

This unique Molière play, itself a metatheatrical gem, will come alive on the picturesque stage of Fort Antoine, promising audiences an unforgettable experience. The event is a collaboration between the Académie Rainier III and the renowned theatrical troupe Le Cercle Molière, guaranteeing an evening filled with laughter, drama, and insight into the world of 17th-century French theatre.

Music and movement enhance the performance

The performance will be enriched with musical and choreographic elements, creating a complete artistic experience. Talented students from the Musique Ancienne department, members of the Junior String Orchestra, and percussion students will join the cast on stage. Their musical accompaniment, under the expert direction of Stéphane Comby, and the carefully crafted choreography by Marie-Pierre Genovese, will add new dimensions to Molière’s text, drawing viewers deeper into the atmosphere of preparing a courtly play.

A hilarious look behind the scenes

L’Impromptu de Versailles is more than just a comedy; it’s an ingenious glimpse into the theatrical process, presented through a hilarious narrative about the frantic preparation of a play intended for the King himself. In this work, Molière masterfully portrays the chaos and tension that reign backstage – actors struggling with unlearned lines, improvising on the fly, and facing all the challenges that accompany creating art under pressure. Through a series of comical situations and dialogues, the play reveals the essence of the acting profession and the eternal dilemmas of artistic freedom versus courtly expectations.

Free admission for a cultural treat

This event is particularly significant as it offers free admission, with mandatory prior reservation, allowing a wider audience to experience the classics of French theatre. It’s a rare opportunity for culture and theatre enthusiasts to immerse themselves in Molière’s world and witness the magic of classic comedy in a unique setting. Don’t miss this exceptional date for all those who appreciate the history of theatre and the European cultural scene!
