Camping in Monaco: What you need to know

While the allure of camping in glamorous Monaco might be strong, it’s virtually impossible in the traditional sense. Monaco is a tiny, densely populated principality focused on luxury tourism, not camping.

Restrictions on camping in Monaco
  • No wild camping: Wild camping and overnight stays in campers or tents outside officially designated locations are strictly prohibited in Monaco. The Principality has zero tolerance for such infractions, and fines are high.
  • No campgrounds: Within Monaco itself, there are no traditional campgrounds for tents, caravans, or motorhomes. All land is extremely valuable and designated for residential buildings, luxury hotels, commercial spaces, or public areas.
  • Inaccessibility for large vehicles: Monaco’s narrow, winding streets, numerous tunnels, and limited parking make it an unfriendly environment for motorhomes and larger vehicles. Driving and parking here can be extremely stressful and expensive.

Alternatives: Camping near Monaco (French Riviera)

Although you can’t camp in Monaco, the French Riviera offers numerous excellent options for camping and glamping, just a short drive away. This is a far more realistic and enjoyable way to visit Monaco while still enjoying nature and the sea.

Camping in Monaco

Some popular regions and places with campgrounds near Monaco include:

  • Menton: Near the Italian border, it offers campgrounds like Camping Le Parc Saint Michel, which boasts beautiful sea views and good train connections to Monaco (about a 12-minute ride).
  • Cap-d’Ail: Right next to Monaco, it also offers some options.
  • Roquebrune-Cap-Martin: A charming nearby village with potential camping sites.
  • Peillon: A bit further inland, but offers quieter campgrounds like Camping de la Laune, approximately 4.8 km from Monaco.
  • Sospel: Located about 18 km inland from Monaco, on the edge of the Mercantour National Park.
  • Nice and surroundings (Cagnes-sur-Mer, Villeneuve-Loubet): These areas, though slightly further (about 20-30 km from Monaco), offer a much wider selection of campgrounds with various amenities, including pools and easy public transport connections.
What to expect from campgrounds on the French Riviera:
  • Diverse options: From basic tent pitches to luxurious mobile homes and glamping tents.
  • Amenities: Most campgrounds offer sanitary facilities (showers and toilets), electricity hook-ups, and often pools, restaurants, and activities.
  • Location: Many campgrounds are situated in beautiful natural settings, near beaches or mountain trails, offering a perfect blend of natural relaxation and proximity to urban centers.
  • Accessibility to Monaco: From these campgrounds, Monaco is easily accessible by train or bus, which is the recommended option over driving.
